The Master’s in Teaching English as a Foreign Language encourages critical and analytical reflection on the role of English as a lingua franca in today's globalized world, the teaching profession, and educational research. It promotes innovation and the integration of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in bilingual learning environments, preparing educators to adapt to contemporary challenges in language teaching.

The Program

What is our program about?

The Master’s in Teaching English as a Foreign Language equips you to rethink traditional teaching practices and to integrate new technologies and methodologies in bilingual learning environments. This program focuses on critical reflection about English as a global lingua franca and its role in education, while also helping you comply with Colombia’s Law 115 of 1994 and the National Bilingualism Plan. By enrolling, you’ll develop skills to enhance English communication at all educational levels, using innovative, student-centered approaches.
Through advanced theoretical and practical training, you will become a more critical and self-reflective teacher, as well as more innovative and creative in implementing a variety of processes and techniques in the English classroom. You will be better equipped to understand and address the problems and needs of your students—whether as individuals, groups, or communities—when learning English as a foreign language. Upon completing the program, you will also be able to design policies and programs for English language teaching.
With an in-depth understanding of the complexities involved in teaching English as a foreign language, you will naturally become a leader in improving these processes at your institution through effective teamwork.

What do you need?

Recent, color, passport-style photo.
Enlarged image of your identification document.
Photo or scan of your undergraduate diploma or degree certificate, along with your grades (not required if you are an Icesi undergraduate graduate). If you have additional postgraduate studies, attach proof.
Updated Curriculum Vitae.
Certificate of two years of experience as a teacher of English or as a teacher of any subject matter in English.
Certificate of Language proficiency at a minimum of a B2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. If no certificate is available, the candidate should take an English proficiency exam at Icesi.
An essay of up to 800 words answering: What drives your participation in the master’s program? What contributions do you foresee the master’s will provide to improve your teaching practice? Share significant experiences in your teaching career, describing their objectives, methodology, and results.
Attending an admission interview with the program director or one of the faculty members.
Submit a personal commitment letter stating your willingness to dedicate an average of 20 hours per week to the Master’s tasks and participate in all activities.
Proof of payment of the application fee.
